Number 1759: Walt Kelly’s Goblin Glen

Hmph. Preparing the scans for this wonderful tale by Walt Kelly, a thought occurred to me. When I bought my copy of this comic back in the early '70s I did not realize that over 40 years hence I would be looking at a caricature of myself .

Enjoy it, anyway! It is from Fairy Tale Parade, Dell Four Color #114 (1946).

Another great artist who worked on Fairy Tale Parade has been called “THE Great Unknown”. This is a fine version of “The Sorceror’s Apprentice” from the same issue of Fairy Tale Parade as the Kelly story. Just click on the thumbnail.

Superheroes may bring more readers to you, but this is definitely one little masterpiece for kids of all ages! Fairy Tale Parade must have been a great mag.
Funny and poetic, and Walt Kelly, too. It surely helps some Europeans to overcome prejudices about American comics. There is more than superheroes, Mickey Mouse and cowboys (though these are fine, too).
PS.: Those Goblins gave you a good scare, huh? You disappeared ALONG WITH YOUR HOUSE AND EVERYTHING!

This is really good stuff. Thanks for the post of Walt Kelly. It is interesting that the word balloons of The Sorcerer's Apprentice are Walt Kelly's as noted by a commenter in 2012.

7f7, the whole comic is lettered by one person, who is not identified by the Grand Comics Database. Was it Kelly? I don't know.

J D, WHAT?! Prejudice against American comics by Europeans? Oh, the shock.

Are Mickey Mouse and any cowboy comics still being published? It has been so long since I was in a comic book shop that I have no idea. Yes, I am a curmudgeon who is stuck in a time long ago, who prefers the old to the new. So sue me!

Also yes, I am afraid of goblins. I have two sister-goblins, one aged 10, one 9, living in my house right now. They are visiting with their father, my son, who will go home in a few days, leaving his goblins with Mrs Pappy and me for another month or so. These goblin girls are very mischievous, apt to fits of loud, raucous laughter over their own private jokes, or screaming if one of the two cheats at a board game (which they often do).

Yes, I fear these goblins because they have cast a spell over me, and it is hard for me to maintain my cranky, grumpy demeanor when they are so busy charming me.

Lucky man.... Keep an eye on your comic collection, though... You never know with these goblins... :-)

J D, I lock the door of my comics "vault"...especially when the goblins are walking the hallways of Casa Pappy. Some of the comics I have in there aren't fit for youngsters, goblins or not.

My son told me yesterday that the youngest "really likes comic books." Uh-oh. We took them to the public library and the older one checked out prose books, while the younger went for the graphic novels. Who knows what that portends? I remember when I first fell in love with comics. Will it be the same for my little goblin girl?

Pappy, IDW recently started publishing Disney Comics. The titles include "Uncle Scrooge," "Donald Duck," and "Mickey Mouse." You can find out more information from Joe Torcivia's website http://tiahblog.blogspot.com/. Joe happens to be one of the authors of Disney stories
